Temporary, Long-term Upper School Music Substitute Teacher (Seattle, WA)

Part Time (.8 FTE) Salary/Exempt

Beginning October 3 (or possibly earlier in mid-September) until November 21, 2025

The Bush School is in search of an individual to join our Upper School team as an Upper School (9th 12th) Long-term Music substitute teacher. We are seeking a candidate who is able to support the school's mission of diversity and inclusion and who has a background that demonstrates an understanding and appreciation of intercultural fluency. The Upper School Music Faculty member reports to the Upper School Director and works closely with students and families, as well as Upper School Faculty and Staff and the Performing Arts Department. This position will be responsible for teaching four sections of music classes - one section each of Jazz Band, Performance Workshop, Modern Orchestra, and Music in Film - and serving as a co-advisor to a group of 10 students.

While other duties may be assigned, a qualified candidate will be able to manage the key responsibilities and duties listed below:

  • Create and sustain a positive classroom culture, based on the mission and values of the school
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities for Upper School music courses that facilitate active learning experiences in a student-driven, inquiry-based manner.
  • Teach music skills and foster a love of music by creating an active-participatory environment
  • Value and incorporate diverse perspectives in daily interactions and within the curriculum
  • Establish classroom expectations that create a safe and comfortable environment for all students
  • Create and sustain effective family partnerships, for example: communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and classroom news via formal fall/spring conferences, written communications, and the school portal
  • Observe/evaluate/assess students' development and maintain accurate records regarding student progress and areas of growth
  • Serve as a co-advisor with another teacher for 10 students
  • Participate actively and with curiosity in school/division/department/committee meetings on Wednesdays until 5:15 pm, as well as student community gatherings during the school day
  • Collaborate with school counselors and learning specialists to plan lessons, curriculum, materials, and resources to effectively serve students with different learning profiles and mental health needs
  • Collaborate with other members of the performing arts department faculty to create common experiences centered on student inquiry
  • Utilize technology to support student success (e.g. Google Docs, Blackbaud, Canvas, etc.)
  • Conscientiously complete other duties as assigned

Experience:

  • Experience teaching music is required, with 3 or more years preferred
  • Proficiency in a variety of instruments and vocals, as well as experience with music production software
  • A bachelor's degree is required, with a music major or related subject area preferred

Additional Requirements:

Have a current Adult and Children CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification (or receive one soon after hire date)

Meet the school's standards when completing two separate background screenings

Compensation/Benefit Information for this position:

  • Salary Range: $9,723 to $29,872 (based on years of full-time, lead teaching experience and duration of long-term sub role)
  • Faculty employees with a master's degree, PhD, and/or National Certification may be eligible for additional compensation
